Planning

"Pitch me, 25 words or less."
Steven Spielberg, director.

Here's my 25 word pitch for my short film idea:
"A documentary following London based band Slowyear from the studio to their debut show, featuring interviews with all four members."

Synopsis

My documentary will revolve around London based band Slowyear, who were formerly known in the local Hardcore scene as In Memory Of. Since March, they have disbanded In Memory Of and parted with their bassist, and created a new band in a new style of music.

Spending a good few months writing, practising and finally recording their debut EP with their new name and line up, the documentary follows them as they play their first gigs, release their EP and comment on the reactions it's recieved.

I ask the band about why they write the music they do, their individual reasons for being in a band, and their opinion on the current climate of the music scene, mainstream and underground. I also ask them about their main influences, musical and otherwise, and what they want out of Slowyear. I also interview members of the audience to see what they think about the band.

Featuring footage of rehearsals, recording their EP and their debut gig, plus individual interviews with each member.

Script

This is the first draft of my script for my documentary. Please view in Full Screen or download it by clicking the appropriate link for a better viewing experience.

After it was marked by my teacher and I read through it a few more times, it changed dramatically and I realised that it wasn't what I wanted from my film.

Please check below, my final and more detailed script. As before, please view in full screen for a the best viewing experience.

Shotlist

This is the shotlist I compiled before I made my film so that my film would be easier to make - I tried my best to follow the shotlist as close as I could, but there are some shots that were not included.

The shotlist was constructed at the same time as my script, so that they had the same content.

Health and Safety

Permission to film

Before each gig I filmed Slowyear playing, I spoke to each respective promoter and venue manager and asked for permission to film - they all obliged. I have no record of this though, as this was an informal agreement.

Safety of equipment

Because I was always filming a group of people, the equipment was hardly ever in danger of being stolen. However, when I wasn't recording I always made sure someone was keeping an eye on it.

I also made sure that I held equipment tightly and made sure that people I gave it to also looked after it.

Organisation of props

Not applicable - I didn't use any props.

Shooting Schedule

Below is the shooting schedule I created before recording and kept with me until I finished recording so that I wouldn't miss any shots that I was intending to take and had written about in the shotlist and script.

I made a key to go along with the shooting schedule to make it easier to understand -
  • yellow highlighter - dates
  • straight underline (black) - houses
  • squiggly underline - venue
  • pink highlighter - crew + helpers
  • straight underline (blue) - gig recordings
  • pencil squiggly - rehearsals
